Tips on posing on your wedding day
Always a special and unique moment, pictures from your wedding will be cherished forever. When you look back at them, you'll want to remember all the energy, happiness, and joy of your big day. One of the best ways to make that happen is by learning how to pose for that special day with the tips we compiled for you.
Bring out your natural smile.
You should practice your natural smile before the big day. To do this, smile with your eyes, teeth and cheeks, chin, and nose.
Don't exaggerate the pose by smiling so much that your face becomes unnatural-looking or strained—remember that you're not at a comedy club!
Relax your arms
The most obvious way to look uncomfortable is to have your arms crossed, but this is also one of the easiest things to fix. Relaxing your arms and keeping them at your sides is a great pose for any wedding photo, so make sure you don't cross them!
Another common mistake is holding your hands in front of you. While this seems like a natural thing to do, it can look awkward if it's done incorrectly. Instead, keep your hands relaxed (but not crossed) and let them hang naturally by your side. This will help create an open posture that makes you feel more confident and keeps the focus on the dress!
Determine your best side
Here are some tips for determining your best side:
Face the light. When facing the camera, it's crucial to ensure that your face is turned towards the light source. This can be either natural or artificial lighting. If you look like a shadow, even if you're wearing a bright dress, you're going to look flat and washed out in photos.
Look at the camera, not at your partner(s). While it's natural to want to steal glances at each other during wedding day photos—and this is especially true when you're posing with loved ones—it's also crucial that photographers see both sides of your face during different poses so they can capture all of those lovely angles!
Angle your body
When you have a moment to pause, think about how you're standing. Your body is the most prominent part of your frame and can create a more flattering pose by angling it towards or away from the camera. If you're not sure how to adjust your pose to make yourself look more attractive in photos, try these tips:
Angle your body towards your partner and turn partially away from the camera so that only one shoulder is visible. This creates a slimming effect in photographs (especially with a V-shaped neckline).
Shift one leg forward while leaning back slightly on the other foot. This will create an hourglass-like shape that looks great when photographed!
Stay close
The closer you are to your partner, the more intimate the photo will look. The further away you are from your partner, the more formal it will seem.
The best way to stay close is by using a prop—a flower bouquet or a piece of jewelry, perhaps. You can also try holding hands or putting an arm around each other's waist.
Add Props
Posing can be intricate for some people. If you're not a natural in front of the camera, don't worry—there are plenty of ways to pose without looking stiff or awkward. One way that helps me is by using props. For example, if I'm trying to get my hands into a relaxed position, I'll hold something like flowers or wedding rings in them, so it looks like I'm holding something. Another thing you can do is take pictures where you're doing something that requires good posture (like walking down an aisle). This will help with body language and show off your best angles!
Be comfortable and enjoy
You're going to look amazing, but you can't see it yet. That's okay! How you feel on your wedding day will show in the photos.
Whether it's taking a deep breath and saying "cheese" or smiling with genuine joy at the person who has been with you through everything else in life—the simple act of being present and open at that moment is all that matters.
If something funny happens while shooting, don't be afraid to laugh out loud! This can make for some amusing photos! Most importantly, though: don't worry about how your face looks in any given photo; trust me when I say that everyone's skin looks better than they think (and certainly better than mine). Instead, focus on having fun and enjoying those precious moments with those closest to you.
Finding a balance between being natural and looking good in photos is key.
Finding a balance between being natural and looking good in photos is vital. You want to look like yourself, but also want to feel like you are beautiful on the most important day of your life. I see many women make the mistake of trying too hard to look perfect (i.e., totally styled hair, flawless makeup, and clothes that fit perfectly). We want something else! The beauty lies in the imperfections; it's why we love Instagram filters so much! Don't worry about your hair or makeup; just enjoy yourself and have fun with it all—you'll thank me later when you look back at your wedding album!
Listen to your photographer.
To nail your wedding photography poses, you must listen to your photographer and follow their instructions. If you need help understanding something, ask them for clarification. Feel free to ask for suggestions if you are struggling with posing on your wedding day!
If you feel uncomfortable or nervous about a pose, speak up! Your photographer wants nothing more than to ensure that both of you are happy with the images they are capturing.
Strike that pose!
It's important to remember that you're not posing for a magazine cover. You should be having fun and enjoying your time with your wedding party and family members. If you're feeling awkward or uncomfortable, take a break from posing and have some fun with the people who love you most!
